Check slide caption lengths before deciding to truncate them

At present, slide captions are unconditionally truncated and split. This leads to undesirable behaviour, e.g.

  • A single word caption is replaced with "..."
  • A short two word caption is replaced by the first word followed by "..." Thus, the length of the text should be checked before truncating
